He was predeceased by: his parents, Frank Unnerstall and Frieda Strong Unnerstall; and his sister June Crites. He is survived by: his children, Julia Unnerstall of Cape Girardeau and John David Unnerstall of Sedgewickville, Missouri; his grandsons, Zachary John Stagner, Samuel David Unnerstall and Colton Jack Unnerstall; his sister-in-law Jo Graves Nunnally; and his nieces, Maria Crites McMahan, Sally Crites Finch and Kristine Nunnally Danchise.
