He was predeceased by: his parents, Lewis McElhaney and Florence McElhaney; and his son Richard Dale McElhaney. He is survived by: his former wife Bonnie Patton; his wife Sue McElhaney; his sons, Donald McElhaney (Barbara) of Bevier, MO, Robert McElhaney (Linda) of Callao, MO and Michael McElhaney of Callao, MO; and his brother Ralph McElhaney (Mary) of Bevier, MO. He is also survived by eight grandchildren; several great-grandchildren.
