He was predeceased by: his parents, Walter Mathis and Lena Mathis (Cupp); his brothers, Eugene, Floyd, Edward and Norman Mathis (Marlene); and his son-in-law Tom Huntsman.
He is survived by: his wife Marlene Ann Griffith; his children, Brenda Woods (Greg) of Jacksonville and Mark Mathis (Jewell) of Cairo; his grandchildren, Wesley Huntsman (Stephanie), Andy Huntsman (Amanda), Calvin Huntsman (Kate), Elise Brendel, Caleb Mathis (Michaela) and Olivia Cribb (Jacob); his great grandchildren, Skyler, Brendan, Logan, Chase, Reed Huntsman, Rhett, Kelly Brendel, Brantley Huber, Opie Mathis, Leena and Zoey Cribb; and his brother Robert Mathis of Kearney, Missouri. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
