He was predeceased by: his parents, Nelson Portell and Dora Portell (Barnes); his wife Alice Mae Portell (Price); his children, Donna Voelker, Mark Portell and Michael Portell; his grandson Steven Hill; and his siblings, Myra Welch and Jesse "Bucky" Portell.
He is survived by: his son Bobby Portell, Jr. (Tammy) of Mineral Point; and his siblings, Nancy Wilson of North Carolina, Marcella Miller (Lynn) of Fenton, Marcia Adams (Dale) of Mineral Point and Melvin Portell (Charlotte) of Cadet.
