He was predeceased by: his parents, James Eli "Hawk" Kimbrel and Mildred Alice Bolin Kimbrel; his wife Emma Nell Williamson; his son Donald Joe "Joey" Kimbrel II; his siblings, Janice Parks and James Wesley Kimbrel; and his niece Donna Sue Belcher.

He is survived by: his daughters, Pamela Mouser (Eric) of Dexter, Missy Douglas (Terry) of Bloomfield and Jamie Kimbrel of Bloomfield; and his nephews, James Michael Kimbrel and Joseph B. Kimbrel. He is also survived by ten grandchildren, four great grandchildren.
