He was predeceased by: his parents, Lawrence Bales and Beulah Reid Bales. He is survived by: his wife Joann Bales; his children, Sheldon Turner (Becky), Anna Lockett, Amanda Tetrick, Anita Tackitt (Jesse) and Melvin Bales, Jr.; and his sister Imogene Lovell (Thomas). He is also survived by thirteen grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren.
