He was predeceased by: his parents, Fredrick H. Mertz and Clara P. Mertz (Schinzing); his wife Nolene Mertz; and his siblings, Walter, Ted Mertz, Helen Heintz, Lillian Lewis and Clara Ann Teague.
He is survived by: his children, Steven Mertz of Ludington, Michigan, Barbara Mertz-Unger (Ray) of Troy, Missouri and Brian Mertz (Yadira) of Hermann, Missouri; his grandchildren, David Mertz, Lauren Westermann and Sarah DeLong; and his great grandchildren, Will, Graham, Nolan, James and Marie. He is also survived by many nieces & nephews.
Memorials may be given to Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church or New Haven American Legion.
