He was predeceased by: his parents, John Wesley Knipfel and Inez Bernice Knipfel (Bird); and his siblings, Edna Scott, Bonnie Karhoff, Judy Hudson, Doris Karhoff, Howard Knipfel and Raymond Knipfel.

He is survived by: his children, Deborah Mefford (Jim) of Walker, IA, Pam Beavers of Anamosa, IA, Michelle Knipfel and Troy Knipfel (Renee) of Auxvasse; his siblings, Robert Knipfel of Mexico, Larry Knipfel of Mexico, Beatrice Means of Bethany, MO and Sandy Callahan of Russellville, MO; and his grandchildren, Natasha Schuler, Travis Doudney, Chad Beavers, Calvin Beavers, Josie Knipfel and Haley Knipfel. He is also survived by nine great-grandchildren.
