He was predeceased by: his parents, Tommy Joe and Martha Ann Bates (Hall); his wife Kay Lynne; and his brother Timothy Joe Bates. He is survived by: his children, Billy Ray Bates of Auxvasse, Jennifer Louise Stiers (James) of Calwood and James Eric Bates (Kendra) of Mokane; his grandchildren, Taylor, Gracie, Kevin, Julie, Fayth, Lotus, Alex, Aiden and Abby; and his brother Bobby Bates (Jill) of Steedman.

Memorial donations may be made to the Central Missouri Honor Flight.
