He was predeceased by: his parents, Ernest O. Downey and Elizabeth L. Downey Jr. (Perrin); his brothers, Richard and Ernie Downey; and his great grandchild Beckett Cox.
He is survived by: his wife Ruth Ann Poe; his children, J. R. Downey (Monica) of Atlanta, MO, Kyle Downey of Columbia, MO, Lisa McKenzie (Rick) of Atlanta, MO, Lori Downey of Macon, MO and Angie Mulnix (Tommy) of Elmer, MO; his siblings, Donald Downey of Macon, MO, Elaine Hopper of Booneville, MO and Linda Stevenson of Excelsior Springs, MO; and his grandchildren, Shelby Pettig, Morgan Tipton, Kaleb Tipton, Christopher Cox, Kennedy Harpster-Thompson, Kambry Mulnix, Cody, Owen and Nora Downey. He is also survived by seven great grandchildren.
