He was predeceased by: his parents, Frank "Manny" and Cecil M. Gates (Hammel); his wife Frances A. O'Brien; his son Steven Gerald Gates; and his brothers, Bounce Gates, Jake Gates and Eddie Gates.
He is survived by: his former wife Deloris Kaye Stoneburner; his friend Marilyn Land (Wright); his children, Tim Gates of Alexandria, MO and Terri Brewer of Loveland, CO; his stepdaughter Shannon Hills (Vern) of Centuria, WI; and his brothers, Ronald "Duckie" Gates (Diane) of Alexandria, MO and Dennis Gates (Chris) of Keokuk, IA. He is also survived by companions; dog "Smokie" and his black cat.
