He was predeceased by: his parents, Aaron Cates and Marjorie Cates; his son Jason Christopher Cates; his parents-in-law, Agnes and Edgar Schaefer; and his sister MaryBeth Elmore.
He is survived by: his wife Barbara; his daughters, Erin Newport (James) of Adrian, MO and Katie Moore (Dave) of Adrian, MO; his grandchildren, Sydney Funk (Richard), Dalton Newport (Hannah), Trevor Newport and Madilynn Moore; his great grandchildren, Audrey and Gabriel; and his siblings, Robert Cates, Sr. of Lee Summit, MO, Sharon Sewell of Perry, OK and James Fike, Sr. (Terri) of Buckner, MO. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
