He was predeceased by: his parents, William Erkkila (Bill) and Agnes Erkkila; and his stepfather John Haapoja. He is survived by: his wife Lois Aspengren; his daughters, Rachel Brolin (Craig) and Beth Robinson (Rich); his sister Doris Rowland (Tom); and his grandchildren, Brianna, Brandan, Alyssa, Justin, Bryce and Lydia. He is also survived by several nieces and a nephew.
