He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph Hovda and Selma Hovda (Olson); his wife Darlene Helmbolt; and his siblings, LuVerne Hovda and Charlotte Steffen.

He is survived by: his son Roland Hovda (Margie Holmack) of Willmar; and his siblings, Sheldon Hovda (Diane) of Sioux Falls, DeeAnn Hovda of Hutchinson, Charles Hovda (Kathy) of Fresno, CA and Cheryl Wasmund of Willmar.
