He was predeceased by: his parents, Roy Saunders and Judy Saunders; his uncles, David Custard and Harlan Luhmann; and his grandparents, Ed, Margaret Custard and Vera Custard.

He is survived by: his brother Brian Saunders (Laura); his nieces, Crystal Bester (Brian), Heather Marty (Josh) and Theresa Benner; his nephew Joseph Benner; his uncle Dwayne Custard (Karen); and his aunts, Peggy Nelson (Dick), Gayla Miller (Jim), Dorene Luhmann and Peggy Custard. He is also survived by many cousins, other relatives and friends.

“I met David in the Navy during training in Millington TN as well as Jacksonville and Pensacola FL. He was always a kind hearted individual with a laugh and smile you would never forget. We had many friends in the Navy and everyone always spoke of him when we would meet at reunions or just friendly conversation. He earned a nickname back in those days "Sarge". Rest in piece "Shipmate", God speed, fair winds and following seas. Jeff”
