He was predeceased by: his parents, Clem Mertes and Fran Mertes (Kotnour); and his stepfather Walter Schmidt. He is survived by: his wife Dee (Trainor); his children, Christopher (Janice), Gregory (Lori) and Michelle Bump; and his siblings, Paul (Linda), Christine Antoff (Harley) and Diane Hoseck (Bruce). He is also survived by 5 grandchildren, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
The family respectfully asks that in lieu of flowers, memorials would be appreciated to Cotter Schools in Winona, or to the Gundersen- St. Elizabeth's Care Center in Wabasha.
