He was predeceased by: his parents, Robert Carlson and Hildur Sandvik (Peterson); his stepfather Ralph Sandvik; and his brother Jim. He is survived by: his wife Carole; his son Mark Carlson (Julie); his grandson Spencer; and his siblings, Darla Meier (Gary), Pete Carlson (Suzie), John Carlson (Debbie) and Wendie Carlson. He is also survived by his in-laws, the Hurd family; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Lake County Humane Society or St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
