Pete Peterson wrote a sympathy message

“My thoughts and prayers are with the Savage family. Don was a wonderful husband, father and a credit to his country. Those that served with him, as members of the USS Ajax R-5 Division, were well aware of his strengths. And consistent with his character, he fought the great fight in his battle with ALS. Even when times were the most difficult, he never surrendered, not even an inch. I, nor will anyone else, ever forget him. With a heavy heart, Pete Peterson”
