He was predeceased by: his parents, Claremont Kirkwold and Cora Kirkwold (Tollefson); and his son Jeffrey Kirkwold. He is survived by: his son Jeffery; his close friend Michael; his wife Sue Rosengren of Starbuck; his sons, Matthew Kirkwold (Sarah Roddy) of Crystal, Keith Kirkwold (Amber Hvezda) of Lowry and Michael Opdahl (Pennie) of Milton, WI; his grandchildren, Brady, Peyton and Odin Kirkwold; and his siblings, Maxine Halverson, Janice Pettit (Tom), Robert and Larry Kirkwold. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He volunteered for the Let's Go Fishing organization and subsequently the Minnewaska Lake Association Fishing for Seniors up until Covid in 2019. He was involved with the grief support group, Compassionate Friends, from 2014 - 2019 until it was paused also because of Covid.
