He was predeceased by: his parents, Howard "Jack" Petersen and Fern Margaret Petersen (Steckelberg); his former wife Carolyn Ann "Dutch" Melheim; his children, Jennifer and Jonathan; and his siblings, William and Julia.

He is survived by: his wife Charlotte; his children, Stephanie Petersen, Paul Petersen (Mary) and Rebecca Froehlich (Daniel); his stepchildren, Daniel Sommers (Sophie) and Stephanie Hatfield (Craig); his grandchildren, Jamie White (Ross), Ellee, Jack Petersen, Norah Froehlich, Emma, Clara and Theodore Hatfield; his great grandchildren, Tessa and Sadie White; and his sisters, Janet Thorkelson (Doug) and Linda Townsend (Greg). He is also survived by many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
