He was predeceased by: his father Gerald Hughes; and his friend Kristy Meyers. He is survived by: his mother Marilyn Hughes (Espeland); his former wife Jennifer Mapson; his children, Derek Hughes, Logan Hughes and Taylor Hughes; his fiancée Kristy Meyers; his siblings, Brian Hughes (LeAnn) and Stacey Braun; his partner's son Lance Meyers; his nieces and nephews, Matthew, Kristin, Jared, Brady and Amber; and his pets, Max and Sadie.

Memorials are preferred to the National Fallen Officer Foundation.
