He was predeceased by: his parents, Elmer John Schmidt and Margaret Elizabeth Schmidt (Craig); and his brother Thomas Walter Schmidt. He is survived by: his spouse Betty Carol Ellingson; his children, Carine Elizabeth, Benjamin Jay, Carine Lindberg (Brian) and Benjamin Schmidt (Katie); his grandchildren, Jake, Brock Schmidt, Greta, Wilson and Henry Lindberg; and his sister-in-law Roxanne Schmidt (Tom).

In lieu of flowers, Memorials are preferred to the Alzheimer's Association.
