He was predeceased by: his mother Bessie; his stepfather Marcelino Barrera; his father Manuel Melendez, Sr.; and his siblings, Joe Melendez and Shirley Brown.

He is survived by: his wife Patricia; his children, Mary Jane (Peter Laird), Anne, Manny and Lori; his grandchildren, Mason and Elyse; and his sisters, Patty Hyatt, Jane Hauge and Dolly Melendez. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
