He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph and Inez; his daughter Melissa; and his sister Joni. He is survived by: his fiancée Sharon Cecere; his son Jim Ernster (Jenny); and his granddaughters, Alayna, Jessie, Grace and Cassie.

In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Cretin-Derham Hall or the University of St. Thomas.
