He was predeceased by: his parents, Roman Smieja and Ermalinda Smieja (Kranz); and his brother Duane. He is survived by: his wife Susan Herold; his sons, Nathan (Leyla), Wade (Melissa), Adam (Katie) and Isaac (Erin); his grandchildren, Khalil, Mateis, Niya, Ajay, Ian, Wyatt, Jackson, Addison, Josephine, Ariana and Beckett; and his sisters, Donna Mae Smieja and Marcia Blum (Michael). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
