He was predeceased by: his former wife Anita Armstead Sample; and his parents, Glenn W. Sample and Mary Catherine Sample. He is survived by: his wife Betsi Sample (Ripple); his sons, Derek (Valerie) and Peter (Beth); his stepson Carson Ripple (Tawnya); his siblings, Louise Sample Hass, Joseph Sample (Angela) and Elizabeth Sample Yegerlehner (Steven); and his grandchildren, Brooke Sample, Dustin Maki (Brenna), Addie, Zoe and Will Ripple.
