He was predeceased by: his parents, George Schmitz and Mathilda Schmitz; his wife Helen Jean Schmitz; and his siblings, Catherine Mehr, Leonard Schmitz, Herbert Schmitz, Henry Schmitz, Mathias Schmitz and Paul Schmitz.

He is survived by: his children, Ronald Schmitz, Roger Schmitz (Michelle), Maria Houseal (Kirk) and Scott Schmitz (Dook); his grandchildren, Marc Schmitz, Quimera Schmitz, Sara Schmitz, Emily Schmitz, Nicole Kerlin (Joe), Anna Lopez (Kris) and Tayzo Schmitz; his great grandchild Sebastian Mann; his close friend Diane Elsberry; and his siblings, Martin Schmitz, Herman Schmitz, Frances Remer and Robert Schmitz. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
