He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, William Wanous and Jane Wanous; his children, Tom and Nairobi; his close friends, Dr. Robert Dietl and Dr. Meg Glattly; his brother Bob; and his children, Michael (Martha), Christine, Mark (Michelle), Sarah (Greg) and Bonnie (Brian). He was also cherished by ten grandchildren, one great-grandson.

In 2003, Tom was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.
