He was predeceased by: his brother Richard "Dick" Gernentz. He is survived by: his wife Barb Smith; his sons, Chad Gernentz (Jess) of Farmington and Brett Gernentz of Red Wing; his grandchildren, Chase White (Kendall), April, August, Gracy, Marlee, Niko and Greta Gernentz; and his great grandchild Scarlett White.
In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to Veterans organizations, Closet 54 or the Red Wing Field of Honor at Bay Point Park.
