He was predeceased by: his parents, Mathias Stein and Magdalena Stein (Feidt); his brother Norbert; and his brother-in-law George Otto. He is survived by: his wife Louella M. Langenfeld; his children, Jerome (Joanie) of Kellogg, Lorna Grieger (Mark) of Rochester, Larry of Randolph, Mike (Brandie) of Farmington and Michelle Emery (Kurt) of Stanton; his grandchildren, Andy Stein, Kayden Fox, Brittany (Brandon Stein), Jennifer Kleckley, Jeremy (Jessica Thomas), Brooke (Briana Stein) and Kendra (Collin Emery); his siblings, Nick (Annette) of Cannon Falls and Liz Otto of Hastings; and his sister-in-law Kathleen Stein of Hastings. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and loving in-laws.
Memorials may be given in Joe's memory to St. Pius V Catholic Church and American Cancer Society.
