He was predeceased by: his father Richard J. Sauer; and his daughter Nicole. He is survived by: his wife Rita Freiseis; his friend John Borchardt; his mother Helen Kiyo Sauer (Sugai); and his brother-in-law David Freiseis (Sara). He is also survived by several nieces and nephews, as well as many cousins.
