He was predeceased by: his parents, Peter Gau and Frances Gau; his wife Bernice Thalhuber; his half-brother Wilfred; and his siblings, Francis "Frank", Sylvester "Sy", Virginia "Ginny", Mary Agnes, Rose Marie "Rosie" and Mary Ann "Petie".

He is survived by: his children, David (Jean) and Patricia; his grandchildren, Deborah, Nicholas (Liz), Suzannah and Ryan; his great grandchildren, Henry and Eddie; his siblings, Iolene "Io" (Bob) and Ervin (Rosemary); and his siblings-in-law, Lois and Richard (Bev). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
