He was predeceased by: his son John Swertel, Jr.. He is survived by: his spouse Marge; his children, Jim Swertel (Nancy) and Peggy Vahlsing (Kent); his sister June Foran; his grandchildren, Derick, Jimmy, Jacob Swertel, Jake, Kassie and Lindsey Ward; and his great grandchildren, Chloe Swertel, Grayson Swertel and Oliver Swertel. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
