He was predeceased by: his daughter Melanie; and his parents-in-law, Gordon and Kay Carlson. He is survived by: his wife Jill Carlson of Oslo; his children, Megan Lysford (Michael Meehlhause) of Bemidji, Garrett Lysford (Kaylee) of Pasadena, MD, Ester Ferret Mas (Jeremy) of Bristol, UK, Chelsie McLaughlin (Chris Lommen) of Phoenix, AZ and Rheanna Moles (Brandon) of Phoenix, AZ; his granddaughter Eva Lommen; his siblings, Mary Kay Schuh (Ken) of Lakota, ND, Troy (Kathleen) of Dalhart, TX, Tim (Josie) of Dalhart, TX and Doug (Nancy) of Karlstad; and his parents-in-law, Jan Sobolik (Rob) of Moorhead, MN, Joan Gottsman (Greg) of Maple Grove, MN, Jacquie Schulte (Tim) of Hallock and Eric Carlson of Mooreton, ND. He is also survived by 14 nieces and nephews.

Vern and Jill created the Melanie Lysford Foundation, which for 23 years has awarded scholarships to students of Jim Hill Middle School to attend Jazz Band Camp at the International Peace Gardens, and Advanced Space Academy of Hunstville, AL.
