He was predeceased by: his parents, Alfred Salo and Alma Salo; his parents-in-law, Matt and Esther Bernu; his foster brothers, Elmer and Milton Makinen; his brothers, Thomas Salo (Donna) and Gerald Salo; and his brothers-in-law, David Anderson, Donald Bernu (Arlene) and Delbert Bernu.

He is survived by: his wife Dorla Ann Bernu; his sister-in-law Dorthy Ranta (Rudy); his children, Pamela Hotakainen (Rick), Douglas Salo (Becky), Dean Salo (Janelle), Tamara Salo and Kari Carlson (Brian); his grandchildren, Jason Hotakainen (Sara), Cody Salo (Haley Christensen), Jared Hotakainen (Kayla), Wade Salo, Emily Wrage (Felix), RaeAnna Wegscheid (Tanner), Taylor Carlson (Aleashia), Kenna Salo, Bren Salo and Torrey Carlson; his great grandchildren, Sadie, Charlie, Noelle Hotakainen, Layla, Cade Salo, Gage, Remi Hotakainen, Kaia and Brynn Wegscheid; his siblings, Warren Salo (MaryJane) and Margie Anderson; and his siblings-in-law, Darwin Bernu (June), Duane Bernu (Irene), Joani Salo and Carolyn Bernu. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, and many friends.
