He was predeceased by: his wife Kim Thompson; his brother Glen Thompson; and his parents, Wilfred "Woody" and Alice Thompson (Poehler). He is survived by: his nephew Pastor Timothy Fitzner; his daughters, Christi Wilts (Bruce) of White and Sarah Madison (Thomas) of Sioux Falls; his grandchildren, Megan Stevens (Kali) of Warner Robins, Georgia, Jolene Rydell (Joe) of Alliance, Amelia Moore (Scott) of Colorado Springs, Hunter Wilts of White, SD, McKenzie Wilts of White, SD, Kailea Clites of Gilbert, Vincent Madison of Sioux Falls, SD and Vivienna Madison of Sioux Falls, SD; and his siblings, Kathy Fitzner (Mark) of Courtland, Brenda VerCauteren (Mel) of New Ulm, Debra Cottrell (Douglas) of New Ulm, Gerald Thompson (Brenna) of Courtland and Don Thompson of Courtland. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Immanuel Lutheran Church/School in Courtland.
