He was predeceased by: his mother Karen Koestler (Messerschmidt). He is survived by: his wife Tammy; his children, Kristina and Shane (Ashley); his stepdaughter Megan Odegard (Christian); his father Arlen Koestler; and his siblings, Deborah Kuck, Rachel Grack (Merel) and Michael Koestler (Patricia). He is also survived by his aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to St. John's Lutheran Church or Virginia Piper Cancer Center.
