He was predeceased by: his son-in-law Jim Carroll; his siblings, Viola Buysse, Agnes Buysse, Rose Reirson, Alfred Dewanz, LeRoy "Slivers" Dewanz and Melvin Dewanz; his brother-in-law Wally Havemeier; and his parents, Fred Dewanz and Clementina Dewanz (Popp).
He is survived by: his wife Opal Dewanz; his children, Christine Carroll of Mankato, Kay Meinzer (Dan) of New Ulm, Clayton Dewanz (Christie) of New Ulm and Kevin Dewanz (Donna) of New Ulm; his grandchildren, David Dewanz (Tena), Christopher Dewanz (Ana Lindholm), Bryan Dewanz (Emily Rutscher), Aaron Dewanz, Jennifer Meinzer, Danielle Hemme (Chad) and Nicklaus Dewanz; and his great grandchild Peyton Hemme. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
