He was predeceased by: his parents, Paul Hammerschmidt and Sylvia Hammerschmidt (Bellig); his parents-in-law, Glennard and Lorraine; his daughter Tracey; his brother Mark; and his sister-in-law Marilyn.
He is survived by: his wife Shirley Hammerschmidt of Morgan; his children, Tammy Elsing (Dave) of Prinsburg, Tina Skelton of Midlothian, TX, Tom Hammerschmidt (Deb) of Morgan and Todd Hammerschmidt (Laurie) of Sleepy Eye; his son-in-law Dean Lippert (Terry Hammerschmidt) of Blomkest; his siblings, Lyle Hammerschmidt (Patricia) of Neenah, WI, Glen Hammerschmidt of Alexandria, David Hammerschmidt (Nancy) of Spicer, Cheryl Zuhlsdorf of Alexandria and Monica Wurtzberger (James) of New Ulm; and his sister-in-law Cheri Staerkel (Mike) of Sleepy Eye. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
