He was predeceased by: his parents, Ernest Sawatzky and Bertha Sawatzky (Behm); his son Michael; and his siblings, Gerhardt Sawatzky (Elsie), Franklin "Fritz" Sawatzky, Pauline Fredenberg (Ernie) and Viola Kohout.

He is survived by: his wife Gwen Sawatzky of Montgomery; and his children, Cindy Holicky (Duane) of Le Center, Julie Holicky (Lyle) of Le Center, Matthew Sawatzky (Carla Vossen) of Montgomery and Paul Sawatzky of Montgomery. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; 4 step great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the American Cancer Society or American Diabetes Association.
