He was predeceased by: his parents, Hildegard Gerlach (Molitor) and John Gerlach; his brother-in-law Joseph Breckner; and his stepson Matthew Blackburn. He is survived by: his wife Suzanne Sietsema Blackburn; his children, Todd Gerlach (Kristen), Greta Schetnan (Judd) and Brett Blackburn; his grandchildren, Cecilia, Gus, Oscar, Annalise Gerlach, Noah and Lewis Schetnan; and his sisters, Marlene Breckner, Carol Phillips (Steve) and Mary Kay Kulla (Don). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
