He was predeceased by: his mother Blanche Tepley (Comer); and his siblings, Anne Brown (Sundell) and Jeffrey Sundell Sr.. He is survived by: his grandchildren, Reyna, Boden, San and Junnie; his siblings, Cathie Schelinbarger (Lee) and Paul Duke (Pat); his mother-in-law C. Andree Dodson; and his wife Diane.

“I am heartbroken because of John's passing. He was a dear brother who I just had the privilege of spending time with at FW just 10 days ago. The first thing that came to mind was Psalm 84:10 that says; " a single day in God's presence is better than a thousand somewhere else" John would not want to return but he will be greatly missed; he invested his life from an eternal perspective and is now in a place that eye has not seen, ear has not heard, mind not imagined what God has prepared for him.”
