He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph Arnold and Marie Vartdal; his former wife Betty Straw; and his brother Robert Vartdal. He is survived by: his wife Mary Vartdal of Amarillo, Texas; and his children, Vernon Vartdal of Arlington, Scott Gorham of Andover, Tim Gorham of Osseo, Vicki Reynolds of Austin, Steve Perryman of Fort Worth, Rhonda Gorham of Andover, Susie Dubois of Austin, Jim Perryman of Amarillo and Kirsten Mccall of Minnetrista, Minnesota. He is also survived by son and daughters in law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, one niece, and one nephew.
