She was predeceased by: her parents, Albert Bernauer and Merced Bernauer (Bishop); her husband James Carl Schmidt; and her brothers-in-law, David Morstad and Warren Gaslin.
She is survived by: her daughters, Susan Miller (Charles), Cindy McDougall (Jay), Fergus Falls and Jami McRoberts (Mike); her grandchildren, Meadow Forget (James "Vinnie"), Noah Miller, McKenzie Wachlarowicz, Max McDougall, Molly McDougall (Paul Reopelle), Myria Kirkpatrick and Riley McRoberts; her great grandchildren, Christian, Tyler, Gerald, Matt, Jon, Jonathan, Mason, Cecilia, Caroline, Jackson, Bennett and Cameron; her great great grandchild Aiden; and her siblings, Marilyn Morstad, Sally Gaslin, John Bernauer and David Bernauer (Mary).
Jo was also a member of AAUW and a volunteer for American Cancer Society, Food Shelf, Meals by Wheels, Reading for the Blind, Friends of the Library, Hospital Gift Shop, A Center for the Arts, YMCA, and a volunteer driver.
