He is survived by: his former wife Susan McMerty Shands; his children, Sunderland Baker Shands, Charlene Mary Shands and Cean Franklin Shands, Jr. (Dolly Agnew); his parents, Mary Helen Shands and John Dykes (Slim); and his siblings, Ronnie Shands (Mardia), Derrick Shands (Melissa), Johnny Shands, Moe Shands (Mia), Ronnie Berry, Donna Barnes (Raymond) and Leticia Shands-Woolfolk (Ronald). He is also survived by his family, friends.
A funeral service was held on Wednesday, January 8th 2025 at 11:00 AM. A celebration of life was held on Saturday, January 18th 2025 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the Nicollet Island Pavilion (40 Power Street, Minneapolis, MN 55401).
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made in his memory to Neighborhood Justice Center, reflecting his lifelong dedication to the organization not only as an attorney, but as a board member as well.
