He was predeceased by: his parents, Jacob Mikkelsen and Clara Mikkelsen (Clausen); his wife Bonnie Lou Boell; and his sister JoAnn McBane. He is survived by: his great grandchildren, Beth Mikkelsen, John Lillevold of Yankton, SD, Ann, Keith Oxford of Baton Rouge, LA, Kirk Mikkelsen and Lenore Imhof of Chaska, MN; his children, Kira, Anna, Tera and Richard Nordby of Woodbury, MN; his grandchildren, Anika and Charlie; and also, Hans, John, Jens and Laura. He is also survived by his four children, spouses, eight grandchildren.
