He was predeceased by: his parents, Jerome James and Drusilla "Sil" Lucille Kunkel (Wiegert); his former wife Eileen M. Gaboury; his great grandchild Eileen; and his brothers, Robert and Edward Kunkel.

He is survived by: his wife Dottie Gimmer of Mankato; his sons, Jerrold Kunkel (Shelly) of New Ulm, Keith Kunkel (Rosemary) of Madison Lake and Tony Kunkel (Michele) of Yankton, SD; his grandchildren, Katie, James, Bella, Cheyenne, Adam, Rachael, Killian, Ivy and Ian; his great grandchildren, Freyja, Avi, Knox and Rhett; his stepchildren, Connie Nielsen (Doug) of Mankato, Rhonda Tolzmann of Mankato and Dean Larson of Mankato; his grandson Jayden Larson; his siblings, Charlotte Klose (Gehard) of Sun City, AZ and Philip Kunkel (Rosemary) of St. Cloud; and his sisters-in-law, Sandy Kunkel of Minnesota and Kathy Kunkel of Mapleton. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, and extended family.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Habitat for Humanity or the donor's choice.
