He was predeceased by: his parents, Donald Markert and Annette Markert (Lohse); his brothers, Dennis and Thomas; his brother-in-law Wendell Rene; and his niece Stacy Werner.

He is survived by: his wife Gayle; his sons, Daniel (Lisa) of Moorhead, John (Stacy) of Shakopee, MN, Joel (Kelly) of Barnesville, MN and David (Sarah) of Bemidji, MN; his grandchildren, Megan, Amanda, Katie, Keaton, Max, Ashton and Jaxson; his siblings, Robert Markert (Susan) of Fargo, Patricia Rene of Hastings, MN, Rebecca Frischman (Jeff) of Lake Worth, FL, Jennifer Werner (Pete) of Hastings, MN and Dawn Envik (Jerry) of Moorhead; and his sister-in-law Nitaya Markert of Clarksville, TN. He is also survived by 13 nieces and nephews; and 27 great nieces and nephews.

Curtis Gene Markert died from COVID-19 on Tuesday, October 5, 2021, at Sanford Hospital in Fargo, ND, at the age of 81.
