He was predeceased by: his parents, Elmer Gillespie and Clara Gillespie (Steinbach); his daughter Kara; and his brothers, Patrick Gillespie and Tom Gillespie.

He is survived by: his former wife Kathryn Kay Gronewold; his wife Kay Gillespie; and his children, Tim (Terri) of Tempe, AZ and Amy Dougherty (Dan) of Center Cross, VA.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to: Mayo Clinic, Rochester Hospice or the Madelia Veterans Memorial.
