He was predeceased by: his parents, Henry Appel and Laura Appel (Uhlken); his wife Waunitta Grace Thompson; his son Dennis Appel; his grandson Justin Salzwedel; his siblings, Myron (Mary Lou Appel) and Lorraine (Ed Carlson); and his siblings-in-law, Merle (Cathy Thompson) and Jurene (Ray Roslansky).
He is survived by: his children, Debra Salzwedel (Wade) of Lakefield, Dawn Rossow (Mike) of Lakefield and Brad Appel (Kim) of Fairmont; and his grandchildren, Jason Rossow, Jeremy Rossow, Heather Hawkins (Rod), Mason Salzwedel (Jackie), Brandi Larson (Jesse), Tara Boogerd (Jeremy), Shawna Appel, Melissa Minton (Ernie) and Kendra Petersen (Jacob). He is also survived by twelve great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lakefield.
